A Spark of Defiance

The silk of the blouse felt alien against my skin, a whisper of disapproval from my own body. Joseph had chosen it, of course. His choices were always the loudest things in the room, drowning out any other sound, any other thought. He’d held it up to me in the hushed confines of his office, the afternoon sun slanting through the blinds, painting stripes across his face. “This,” he’d said, his voice a low rumble that vibrated in the air, “will suit you perfectly, Sophia.” And I, young and eager to please, had nodded, a silent surrender I was only now beginning to understand.

It was a pale, almost translucent lavender, clinging in all the wrong places, a stark contrast to the modest, sensible attire I’d arrived in. He’d dismissed my initial hesitation with a wave of his hand, his eyes, those deep, fathomless pools, holding mine captive. “Nonsense, my dear. You have a figure that deserves to be admired. Don’t hide it away.” His words, laced with a sweetness that now tasted like poison, had disarmed me. I’d wanted to be admired. I’d wanted to be seen.

Now, sitting at my desk, the hum of the office a distant drone, I traced the delicate stitching of the hem. It was a subtle shift, wasn’t it? From the crisp blouses and tailored skirts I’d worn before, to these softer, more revealing fabrics. He’d started with small things, a slightly shorter hemline, a neckline that dipped a fraction lower. Then came the fabrics, the silks and satins that felt too intimate, too exposed. And then, the colors. He gravified towards pastels, he’d told me once, shades that reminded him of spring blossoms, of youth. It felt less like a compliment and more like a carefully crafted cage, each garment a delicate, silken bar.
