The air in the interrogation room was thick with unspoken accusations, a palpable tension that clung to Scarlett like the cheap motel soap she’d used that morning. Outside, the city hummed, oblivious to the grim tableau unfolding within. Her father’s case file, a brittle testament to years of unanswered questions, lay open on the table between her and James Porter. His gaze, usually a steady anchor, was troubled, a flicker of something akin to pity in the depths of his eyes.

“Scarlett, we’ve been over this,” James said, his voice a low rumble. “The Hartwell murder is a priority. Your father’s… it’s cold. It’s been cold for twenty years.”

Scarlett traced the faded ink of a police report, the words blurring into a familiar ache. “But the similarities, James. Evelyn Hartwell. Found in her hotel suite, a single gunshot wound. Just like my dad.” She looked up, her gaze unwavering. “And the timing. This gala, this ‘Circle’ they’re hinting at… it all feels connected.”
