The air in the Hartwell Grand Hotel’s ballroom, once thick with the cloying scent of expensive perfume and the murmur of polite conversation, now hung heavy with the metallic tang of something far more grim. Detective Scarlett Hayes stood amidst the scattered remnants of the masquerade – a fallen feather boa, a discarded jeweled mask, the ghostly imprint of a footprint in what she suspected was more than spilled champagne. Evelyn Hartwell, the woman whose life had been extinguished amidst this opulent display, was being meticulously documented by forensics.
“Anything?” Scarlett’s voice was tight, a controlled tremor of impatience running beneath the surface. She glanced at James Porter, her partner, his weathered face a mask of professional detachment. He shook his head, his gaze sweeping the opulent room.
“Clean. Too clean, almost. No sign of forced entry, no struggle that wasn’t immediately contained. Whoever did this… they knew what they were doing.”
