Adrian makes coffee, their shared domesticity a stark contrast to the danger. Serena feels a fragile trust growing, the first signs of comfort in his presence.
The storm had finally retreated. Not vanquished, not gone, but merely retreated, leaving behind a sky the color of bruised plums and the scent of wet earth clinging to the air. Serena woke slowly, the phantom weight of Adrian’s shoulder still a ghost against her own. The apartment was quiet, the kind of quiet that settled after chaos, and the faintest hint of coffee brewing drifted from the kitchen.
She sat up, disentangling herself from the blanket, and swung her legs over the side of the couch. Her muscles ached with a dull fatigue, the kind that settled deep in the bones after a prolonged bout of fear. Her hair was a mess, and she suspected her face was too. She hadn’t even bothered to brush her teeth before collapsing onto the sofa.
Adrian was in the kitchen, his back to her, silhouetted against the dim light filtering through the window. He wore the same clothes as yesterday, dark and unassuming, but his presence filled the space with an unshakeable solidity. He moved with an economy of motion, not hurried, not wasted, as he poured coffee into two mugs. One he brought over to her, placing it carefully on the low table beside the couch. The other he kept for himself.
