The rain had stopped, leaving the city slick and gleaming under the streetlights like a polished obsidian stone. But the quiet that followed was a fragile thing, a tense pause before the next inevitable downpour, and Serena felt it in her bones. She was making coffee, the familiar ritual a small anchor in the swirling uncertainty that had become her life. Adrian was in the living room, his presence a solid, almost oppressive weight in the apartment. He hadn’t left. Not really. He’d stayed, ostensibly to see if the ex’s brief, terrifying appearance in the parking lot had any repercussions, but mostly, Serena suspected, because he simply didn’t trust leaving her alone.

She poured the coffee, her hands steady now, a small victory she clung to. The memory of Killian’s face, a dark silhouette against the rain-streaked glass of her car, was still too sharp. Adrian’s immediate, almost predatory intervention had been a relief, but it had also left a cold knot of dread in her stomach. He had been so quick, so decisive, his body a shield between her and the man who had once promised her forever.

She carried two mugs into the living room. Adrian was standing by the window again, his back to her, his silhouette stark against the faint city glow. He wasn’t on his phone anymore. He was just… watching. Waiting.
