The storm had finally retreated, leaving behind a bruised sky and the lingering scent of wet earth. Serena stood at her apartment window, watching the last of the clouds scud across the horizon. The silence felt fragile, a thin veneer over the lingering rumble of thunder that still echoed in her bones. It had been a week since Adrian had first walked into her office, a week of constant vigilance, of phantom touches and the ever-present threat of Killian’s shadow.

Adrian was in the kitchen, the low murmur of his voice a constant presence. He was on the phone, as usual, his conversations with his colleagues a familiar soundtrack to her new reality. He’d been here every day since the parking lot incident, a silent, watchful guardian who had slowly, irrevocably, begun to weave himself into the fabric of her life.

Serena had slept through most of the night, a deep, dreamless sleep that felt like a luxury she hadn’t afforded herself in years. She’d woken to the smell of coffee and Adrian’s quiet movements, and for the first time in a long time, the morning had felt less like a threat and more like a promise.
