The storm had moved on by morning, leaving behind a world scrubbed clean and impossibly bright. Sunlight, sharp and golden, slanted through Serena’s living room window, chasing away the last tendrils of yesterday’s darkness. It felt like a new beginning, a fresh page turned, but the faint scent of damp earth and the lingering memory of thunder still clung to the air.

Adrian was already in the kitchen, the low hum of her coffee maker a steady counterpoint to the quiet of the apartment. He moved with an economy of motion that was both familiar and unnerving, a man who seemed to take up space not by filling it, but by making it his own. He wore the same dark jeans and a simple gray t-shirt that did little to hide the lean strength of his arms.

Serena watched him from the doorway, a strange mix of apprehension and a burgeoning sense of ease warring within her. Last night had been… a turning point. The shared silence, the accidental touch, the way she had fallen asleep against his shoulder – it had shifted something between them. The protective barrier he’d erected had cracked, and in its place, something far more dangerous and compelling had begun to bloom.
