The air in the safe house was sterile, smelling faintly of lemon polish and something else indefinable, something that spoke of temporary occupancy and hushed urgency. It was a world away from the familiar chaos of her own apartment, a stark contrast to the city’s constant thrum. Serena found herself staring at the blank walls, the unadorned furniture, the lack of personal touches that made a place feel lived-in. It was safe, Adrian had assured her, but it didn’t feel like home. It felt like a holding cell.

Adrian had left her with a bottle of water and the quiet instruction to rest, and then he’d disappeared into another room, presumably to make more calls, to coordinate, to continue being the shield she was beginning to rely on. The knowledge that he was still here, still watching, still protecting, was a strange comfort beneath the gnawing unease. It was the comfort of a cornered animal knowing the predator was at least contained, for now.

She sank onto the edge of the plush, neutral-toned sofa, the fabric cool beneath her fingertips. The storm had finally retreated, leaving behind a bruised, grey sky and a lingering dampness in the air. But the silence it left behind was almost louder, a heavy quiet that pressed in on her. She closed her eyes, trying to shake the phantom echoes of thunder, the memory of her ex’s face in the parking lot, Adrian’s immediate, decisive movement to place himself between them.
