Chapter 7

Chapter 7

Elara and Kael evacuate the compromised east side safe house, narrowly avoiding the surveillance van. They relocate to a temporary motel where Kael contacts a former associate, Declan, who confirms the Collectors have accelerated their timeline and are actively hunting both of them. Kael and Elara spend a tense night planning their approach to Tobias's dead drop and debating whether to prioritize rescue or the Meridian operation. In a charged moment of vulnerability, Kael reveals he considered running alone to draw the Collectors away from Elara—a confession that deepens their bond and leads to an intimate scene cut short at its peak. Dawn arrives with a finalized plan: scout the rail yard drop site at noon, retrieve Tobias at ten, then pivot directly to the Meridian dinner within seventy-two hours.

We pulled out heading west, no headlights until we hit the arterial, and even then Kael kept to the right lane, five under the limit, invisible by virtue of being unremarkable.

"They could have tapped the other car," he said, eyes on the road.
