The air in the abandoned warehouse hung thick and heavy, a cloying mix of dust, decay, and the metallic tang of something long past its prime. Carla’s breath hitched in her throat, each inhale a shallow, ragged thing. She’d chosen this place, this forgotten corner of the city, not just for its anonymity, but for the echoes it held. Echoes of shadows, of hidden dealings, of a darkness that had swallowed her mother whole.

She hadn't told anyone where she was going. Not Detective Miller, who was still mired in his official, frustratingly slow investigation, nor Marcus Thorne, whose charm had begun to feel like a silken cage. This was hers. This reckoning.

Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. The single beam from her flashlight cut a shaky path through the gloom, illuminating cobwebs that clung to rusting machinery like spectral lace. The floor was littered with debris – broken pallets, shattered glass, the husks of forgotten dreams. She imagined her mother here, perhaps not in this very spot, but in places like it, places where the light struggled to penetrate.
