I didn't sleep. Not a wink. Every time I closed my eyes, the words on the window burned behind my lids: You are not hidden. Three will find you. One will fall. I’d wiped that fog away a dozen times, but it didn’t matter. The message was etched into my brain now, right next to the prophecy and the taste of that dark presence pressing against the wards like a cold breath on my neck.
Thalia snored. Loudly. It was almost comforting—a normal sound in a very abnormal situation. I watched the first gray light of dawn seep through the curtains and decided staying in bed was a waste of energy. I showered, dressed, and was out the door before Thalia even rolled over.
The dining hall was mercifully quiet at this hour. A few sleepy-eyed vampires nursed blood tea in the corner, and a gnome was rearranging the salt shakers into tiny towers. I grabbed a bagel and sat alone, staring at the bites I forced myself to take.
