Chapter 8
The Introduction of Mark
The low hum of conversation filled the air, a warm, indistinct murmur that was both comforting and, for Noah, a little suffocating. He nursed his beer, the cool glass slick against his palm, and watched Liam across the crowded room. Liam, as always, was a magnetic force, his laughter ringing out, his eyes sparkling as he navigated a cluster of people. They were at Maya’s birthday party, a sprawling affair that had spilled out onto her patio, a tapestry of fairy lights and mingled scents of cheap perfume and barbecue. Noah felt a familiar pang of contentment, the easy rhythm of being Liam’s best friend, his shadow. But tonight, there was an undercurrent, a nervous tremor beneath the surface of their shared history. He’d felt it building for weeks, ever since Liam had first confessed his truth, and since Noah, in a moment of bewildering impulse, had crossed a line he never thought he’d approach.
Liam’s gaze swept the room, a practiced scan, and then his eyes landed on Noah. A slow, knowing smile spread across his face, and Noah felt a blush creep up his neck. It was a look that held a thousand unspoken things, a shared secret that hummed between them like a live wire. Then, Liam’s attention shifted. He’d spotted someone. Noah followed his gaze to a man leaning against the bar, a glass of amber liquid in his hand. The man was tall, with an easy confidence that radiated from him. His dark hair was casually swept back, and his smile, when he turned it towards Liam, was quick and bright. Liam, Noah knew, had a keen eye for people, a sixth sense for charisma, and this man, whoever he was, possessed it in spades.
Liam excused himself from his current conversation, a fluid movement that drew no attention, and drifted towards the bar. Noah watched, a knot tightening in his stomach. He recognized the man, vaguely. Mark. He’d met him a few times at parties like this, a peripheral figure in their social orbit. Mark was outgoing, always seemed to be the center of his own small universe, and Liam, Noah knew, appreciated that kind of energy. Liam began to talk to him, his body angled towards Mark, his gestures animated. Noah felt a strange, unfamiliar prickle of something akin to jealousy, a possessiveness he’d never associated with their friendship. It was absurd, he told himself. They were just friends. Best friends. But the memory of Liam’s mouth on him, the raw, electric shock of it, was a constant, insistent whisper in the back of his mind. Mark laughed at something Liam said, a deep, hearty sound, and then his eyes met Liam’s, a shared glance that held a spark of something more than casual acquaintance. Liam’s smile widened, and Noah felt a jolt, a sudden, dizzying intuition. Liam wasn’t just making small talk. He was assessing. He was… considering.
