Chloe’s eyes, the color of warm honey, seemed to catch the ambient light of the bustling café, reflecting not just the chatter and clatter, but something else entirely. Liam felt it first, a prickle of unease crawling up his spine, a sensation he hadn’t experienced since the very early days of their secret. He glanced at Noah, who was mid-sentence, recounting a ridiculous anecdote about his boss. Noah’s smile was genuine, his usual easygoing charm radiating outwards, but as Liam’s gaze met Chloe’s across the crowded room, he saw Noah’s smile falter, just for a microsecond.

Chloe wasn’t looking at Noah’s animated face. Her attention was fixed on Liam, her head tilted slightly, a contemplative frown creasing her brow. It was subtle, almost imperceptible, but Liam knew that look. It was the look of someone piecing together a puzzle, of noticing the stray thread that didn’t quite belong. They were supposed to be just Liam and Noah, best friends, two guys who’d known each other since kindergarten. But lately, there had been a current running between them, an invisible tether that pulsed with unspoken desires and clandestine touches.

Liam forced a casual smile, hoping to deflect Chloe’s scrutiny. He caught Noah’s eye again, and this time, Noah’s expression was a mirror of Liam’s own dawning apprehension. Noah’s hand, which had been resting casually on the table, clenched almost imperceptibly. The easy flow of conversation faltered for a beat, a tiny tremor in the otherwise steady rhythm of their lunch with friends.
