The air in the village square was thick with the scent of drying hay and the murmur of familiar voices. I watched Liam from across the way, his brow furrowed in concentration as he sketched in his ever-present notepad. He had this way of losing himself in his art, a quiet intensity that drew me in like a moth to a flame. Today, he was capturing the gnarled branches of the old oak, his pencil dancing across the page with a grace that always made my chest ache.

Then I heard it. A snicker, followed by a low, mocking drawl. "Look at Liam, playin' with his crayons. Still drawing pretty pictures, eh?" It was old Mr. Henderson, his face a roadmap of disapproval, his voice laced with the kind of small-minded judgment that had always made this village feel like a cage. Beside him, a couple of his cronies chuckled, their eyes glinting with amusement.

My gut clenched. Liam, who poured his heart and soul into every stroke, who saw beauty where others saw only ordinariness. He flinched, a barely perceptible tightening of his shoulders, but kept his gaze fixed on his drawing, pretending not to hear. That's what he always did – retreat into himself, let the barbs bounce off. But this time, something inside me snapped.
