A Moment of Vulnerability
During the festival, Layla accidentally reveals her nervousness about intimacy. Noah, sensing her fear, offers gentle reassurance, hinting at his own lack of experience.
The air thrummed with the energy of the Harvest Festival, a symphony of cheerful chatter, the distant strumming of a guitar, and the sweet, earthy scent of drying hops. Lanterns, strung between the ancient oak trees bordering the village green, cast a warm, flickering glow, turning the familiar space into something magical. We’d all gravitated towards the hay bales set up near the bonfire, a comfortable cluster of friends amidst the revelry. Noah’s arm brushed mine as he leaned in to say something, and a tiny spark, independent of the bonfire, ignited in my chest.
He was telling me about the ridiculous scarecrow competition, his eyes crinkling at the corners when he laughed. “Honestly, Layla, some of these farmers take it a bit too seriously. There was one that looked like it was auditioning for a horror movie.”
I giggled, a soft, breathy sound that I hoped he didn’t notice. “I saw that one! It had a real… intensity about it.” My gaze drifted from the scarecrow to Noah, then quickly back to my hands, which were busy fiddling with the hem of my skirt. The truth was, my own intensity was focused entirely on him, on the way his smile made my stomach do a little flip, on the simple comfort of his presence.
