Chapter 7
The Harvest Festival
The annual village harvest festival brings everyone together. Layla and Noah dance, their attraction undeniable. Liam watches Jake, while Mia and Lila share a knowing glance.
The air thrummed with a joyous, chaotic energy. Colored lanterns, strung between ancient oak trees, cast a warm, flickering glow over the village green, illuminating a tapestry of smiling faces and bobbing heads. The annual Harvest Festival was in full swing, a riot of scent and sound – the sweet perfume of apple cider, the savory aroma of roasting corn, the lively strumming of a folk band, and the happy chatter of a community letting loose. It was the kind of night that felt like a promise, a collective exhale after a long season of work.
I clutched Noah’s hand a little tighter, the rough weave of his shirt a comforting anchor against the swirling crowd. We’d been dancing, or more accurately, swaying to the music, for what felt like hours. Every time his gaze met mine, a jolt, electric and potent, shot through me. His eyes, usually so bright and full of playful mischief, held a softer, more serious light tonight, and it made my heart do a clumsy little flip. He’d asked me to dance just as the band struck up a slow, melodic tune, and I’d practically melted into his arms. The world outside our little bubble seemed to fade away; it was just the rhythm of his breathing against my ear, the gentle pressure of his hand on my waist, the sheer, dizzying closeness of it all.
“You alright?” Noah murmured, his voice a low rumble against the music. He leaned in, his breath warm against my cheek, and I could feel the faint stubble on his chin. My stomach did a nervous little flutter. He seemed so… confident. So at ease. I felt like a tightly wound spring, ready to snap at any moment, and the thought of him knowing my deepest, most embarrassing secret – that I’d never even been kissed, let alone anything more – made my palms sweat.
