The late afternoon sun painted the village in hues of honey and rose as Liam and Jake sat on the worn wooden bench overlooking Miller’s Pond. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and the distant bleating of sheep, a comforting symphony of their quiet world. Liam traced the grain of the bench with a fingertip, his gaze lost somewhere in the shimmering water. He’d been quiet for a while, a contemplative silence that Jake knew meant Liam’s artist’s mind was at work, conjuring something beautiful or profound, or perhaps both.
“You’re thinking again,” Jake said, his voice soft, breaking the spell. He nudged Liam’s shoulder gently with his own.
Liam blinked, his focus snapping back. A faint blush touched his cheeks. “Just… looking at the light on the water. It’s incredible how it shifts, isn’t it? Like a thousand tiny diamonds dancing.”
