A Bold Step Forward

The air in the old oak grove tasted of damp earth and secrets. Mia had chosen this place, of course, her artistic soul drawn to the dappled light filtering through the ancient canopy. Lila, usually so quick to offer a suggestion, had simply followed, her hand finding Mia’s as if by instinct. The silence that had stretched between them for so long, a silence filled with unspoken desires and a gnawing fear, was starting to feel like a tangible thing, heavy and expectant.

“It’s beautiful here, Mia,” Lila whispered, her voice a soft breath against the rustling leaves.

Mia squeezed her hand, her own heart thrumming a frantic rhythm against her ribs. “I thought you’d like it. It feels… safe.”
