The air in Noah’s little cottage felt thick, not with tension, but with something softer, more fragile. It was the quiet hum of unspoken thoughts, of fears that had been swirling around Layla and Noah like dust motes in a sunbeam. They sat on the worn rug, a half-finished mug of tea growing cold between them. Outside, the village sounds were muted, the distant bleating of sheep and the faint clatter from the bakery a comforting backdrop to the storm brewing within.

“I… I don’t know how to say this,” Layla began, her voice barely a whisper. She traced the worn pattern of the rug with her finger, her gaze fixed on the intricate swirls. It felt like her whole future was woven into that threadbare fabric, and she was terrified of pulling it too hard.

Noah reached out, his hand hovering just above hers before gently covering it. His touch was warm, grounding. “You can say anything, Layla. You know that, right?” His voice was steady, a practiced calm that always made her feel a little braver. But today, even Noah’s confidence felt like a shield she couldn’t quite borrow.
