The last embers of the harvest festival glowed in the distance, a warm, fading heartbeat against the velvet dark. Laughter, thin and reedy now, drifted on the cool night air, mingling with the chirping of crickets and the rustle of leaves. Noah’s hand, warm and solid, found mine as we walked away from the lingering crowds, the familiar cobblestone path beneath our feet now feeling like a secret passage. My heart thrummed a nervous rhythm against my ribs, a wild bird trapped in a cage of anticipation.

“That was… a lot,” Noah said, his voice a low rumble beside me. He squeezed my hand gently, a silent reassurance that sent a jolt of warmth right up my arm.

I nodded, unable to find my voice. The festival had been everything and nothing. A blur of hay bales, cider, and forced smiles. I’d spent most of it with my eyes darting towards Noah, trying to gauge his mood, to see if he noticed my every nervous twitch, my every stolen glance. Liam and Jake had been a study in quiet intensity, their usual banter laced with an unspoken tension that was almost palpable. Mia and Lila, too, were a puzzle, their shared smiles and quick touches so full of meaning, yet so guarded.
