Lila overhears judgmental comments about relationships. She confides in Mia, her voice trembling, revealing her anxiety about societal expectations and her feelings.
The air in the village bakery always smelled of comfort, a warm hug of yeast and sugar that usually soothed my nerves. But today, the scent felt cloying, heavy with unspoken judgments. I’d ducked in for a loaf of sourdough, hoping for a moment of quiet, but the usual morning chatter had taken a sharp turn. Mrs. Gable, her voice a shrill whisper that carried further than she probably intended, was holding court by the counter.
“Honestly, Lila, it’s just not natural, is it?” she’d said, her gaze flicking towards me as I fumbled with my purse. “These young people today, no sense of tradition. Back in my day, a girl knew her place, and a boy knew his. None of this… confusion.”
My stomach twisted. Confusion. Was that what they saw? Was that what *I* was? I pretended to search for coins, my ears burning. She wasn’t just talking about me and Mia, I knew that. She was talking about Liam and Jake too, and probably even Layla and Noah, though their quiet courtship seemed to be the least offensive in her eyes. It was the *difference* she couldn’t stand. The deviation from the narrow path she’d carved out for herself and expected everyone else to follow.
