Mowe watched from the edge of his small, sun-dappled clearing, his usually bright eyes clouded with a fear that had begun to take root in his heart. The blight, a creeping, grey sickness, was spreading with an unsettling speed. It clung to the leaves of the berry bushes like a shroud, turning their once ruby-red bounty into shriveled, dusty husks. The vibrant green of the forest floor was now interspersed with patches of sickly yellow, and even the sturdy stalks of the village’s staple vegetables sagged, defeated.

He’d seen the sidelong glances when he’d spent too long tending to a drooping wildflower, or when a particularly stubborn seed had sprouted overnight in his garden. They were curious, perhaps, but also a little wary. Would this gift, this secret he guarded so fiercely, make them afraid of him? Would he be cast out, a freak in their midst?
