Chapter 16
The Blight Recedes
The blight recoils from the Great Berry Tree's renewed strength. The vibrant green returns to its leaves, and a soft glow emanates from its core, pushing back the darkness.
The air around the Great Berry Tree shimmered, not with the sickly haze of the blight, but with a vibrant, pulsing energy. Where moments before withered leaves had clung precariously to branches, now emerald shoots unfurled, reaching for the sky with a renewed vigor. A soft, golden light, warm and inviting, bloomed from the very heart of the ancient tree, pushing back the encroaching shadows of the blight with an almost tangible force. The sickly brown that had begun to creep up its mighty trunk now retreated, leaving behind a healthy, robust bark. A collective gasp rippled through the villagers gathered at the base of the tree. Bramble, his face etched with a week of despair, stared with wide, disbelieving eyes. Elder Willow, her usual composed demeanor softened by awe, nodded slowly, a gentle smile gracing her lips.
Mowe, still trembling from the immense effort, felt a profound exhaustion settle over him, but it was a sweet tiredness, a fulfillment he had never known. He had poured everything he had, every ounce of his secret gift, into the Great Berry Tree. He watched as the vibrant green spread, leaf by leaf, branch by branch, a living testament to his hidden power. The oppressive weight of his secret, which had felt like a boulder on his chest for so long, began to lift, replaced by a lightness he hadn't thought possible. He looked at the faces around him, expecting fear, suspicion, perhaps even anger. But all he saw was wonder.
"It's... it's alive again," Bramble whispered, his voice thick with emotion. He reached out a tentative hand, not towards Mowe, but towards a newly unfurled leaf on a nearby sapling that had also been touched by the tree’s revitalizing aura. "The blight… it’s receding."
