Chapter 5
The System's Grasp
Earth's fractured, bureaucratic systems, personified by the 'Warden,' begin to notice the anomaly. Their rigid control tightens, threatening to trap the Second Lander permanently.
The Second Lander, all shimmering hues and gentle curiosity, had never encountered anything quite like Earth. It was a place of hushed voices and guarded eyes, where even the laughter of children seemed to carry a faint, melancholy echo. The concept of a ‘prison’ planet was a bewildering one. They understood confinement, of course, the feeling of being held fast, but this Earth felt different. It was a prison built not of bars and walls, but of intricate, invisible rules that seemed to dictate every breath, every thought.
These rules, the Second Lander was beginning to understand, were managed by something called the Warden. It wasn't a single, grumpy person in a uniform, as the Lander had first imagined. Instead, it was a vast, humming network of procedures, forms, and watchful eyes that seemed to permeate the very air. The Warden’s presence was felt in the way the sky above the cities was perpetually a dull grey, and in the way the pathways between buildings were so strictly defined, as if straying from them would be a grave offense.
The Lander had been cautiously exploring the outer edges of a settlement, a place where the buildings were a little less imposing and the sky sometimes allowed a shy peek of blue. It was here, amidst a patch of stubborn, wild flowers that had somehow defied the neat rows of the cultivated areas, that they met Elara. She was a child, small and bright, with eyes that held a spark of something the Lander hadn't seen much of on Earth: pure, unadulterated wonder.
