The Rock. It loomed, a jagged tear in the horizon, a monument of granite and regret. It was the tombstone for forty-three souls, and for forty-three reasons, Kaelen-7 found himself blinking under a sky that felt too vast, too empty. The air, thin and sharp after the stale, recycled breath of the subterranean world, tasted of dust and something else… something wild and untamed. He’d expected the sun, a blinding revelation after the perpetual twilight of their war. He hadn’t expected the cold.

He stood at the lip of the excavation, the raw, gaping wound from which he had clawed his way back to the world. The earth around it was scarred, churned by the brutal ballet of their final days. Machines lay mangled, their metallic carcasses rusting under the indifferent sky. It was a graveyard, and he was the sole, unwilling mourner. The shadow of The Rock, cast long and deep by a sun that felt alien, stretched across the broken land, a perpetual reminder of the depths he had plumbed, the lives extinguished. It was a darkness he carried within him, a shadow that clung to his bones long after he’d left the inferno below.

He remembered the coin. The cold, worn metal, flipping end over end in the flickering emergency lights, a tiny, insignificant arbiter of life and death. One side for the tags, the letters, the final, hollow rituals. The other for the bomb, the desperate, final act of a lone survivor. He’d watched it spin, a dizzying blur of fate, and then the sickening thud as it settled. He couldn’t recall the flip itself, only the sudden, crushing weight of the outcome. He was the one walking. The other… the other was a memory, a ghost already etched into the stone.
