Chapter 13
A Star's Promise
He seeks to honor his fallen comrades by confronting the blinding star directly. Is it a divine beacon, a heavenly gateway promising reunion, or a force of utter destruction that will erase all traces of their existence? The ambiguity gnaws at him, but the need to know, to find some ultimate meaning in their sacrifice, propels him forward. He is a pilgrim on a path of fire, seeking solace or oblivion in the heart of the celestial inferno.
The cheap whiskey burned a familiar trail down his throat, a meager comfort against the gnawing emptiness that had become his constant companion. The room, a grimy testament to transient despair, offered little solace. Its walls seemed to weep, the peeling wallpaper resembling bruised skin, where dark, viscous blooms of what might have been mold, or something far more sinister, crept outward. He was Kaelen-7, the last ember of a forty-four-man inferno, a walking monument to a war fought in the suffocating darkness beneath the earth. The Rock. They called it that, a place where sunlight was a myth and the air tasted of metal and despair. Forty-three had gone into that stone, into those fluorescent burrows, their teeth bared, fighting until the numbers ceased to hold meaning, until only one breath remained. His breath.
The coin toss. The cruelest joke the universe had ever played. He and… *him*. His name, a phantom on his tongue, a shard of glass in his memory. They had stood there, boots clean, faces etched with the grim understanding of their shared fate. One would carry the weight of their stories, the dog tags, the letters, the names etched onto polished metal. The other… the other would stay with the sun. A fusion bomb, hand-detonated, a final, desperate act of defiance. He didn’t know if he’d won. He was alive, technically. A breathing corpse, adrift in a sea of silence that screamed louder than any explosion.
