The sky had been a bruised purple all afternoon, a moody prelude hanging heavy over the school grounds. Chloe had noticed it too, her brow furrowed as she watched me pick at my lunch. "You okay, Em?" she’d asked, her voice laced with a familiar concern. I'd offered a tight smile, a half-truth about missing home, and a fierce internal vow to keep my cool. But the truth was, Jasper was a constant, gnawing presence, a dark cloud I couldn't seem to outrun. His eyes, when they landed on me, felt like a physical touch, a claim I hadn't agreed to. And every stolen glance, every lingering shadow, chipped away at the carefully constructed walls I’d been trying to build.

The final bell rang, a jarring release that sent a wave of students surging towards the exits. I pulled my backpack higher on my shoulder, a familiar knot of anxiety tightening in my stomach. I wanted to get home, to disappear into the quiet of my room, to let the day’s pressures wash away. But as I rounded the corner by the bike racks, he was there, a solid, imposing figure blocking my path. Jasper.

He leaned against the brick wall, arms crossed, his expression unreadable but for the predatory glint in his eyes. The air around him crackled with an energy I’d come to associate with him – a volatile mix of danger and raw power. My heart gave a sudden, unwelcome lurch, a traitorous beat against my ribs.
