Emery’s usual effervescence begins to dim. The constant battle with Jasper, the feeling of being perpetually watched and pursued, is draining her. She finds herself withdrawing, her laughter less frequent, her conversations more guarded. The vibrant hues of my personality, the ones I’d so carefully curated and flaunted like a peacock’s tail feathers, were starting to bleed, to run into a muddy, indistinct gray. It wasn’t a sudden storm that had washed over me, but a persistent, drizzling rain, each drop a tiny erosion of my usual, irrepressible cheer. School, which had promised a fresh canvas for my life, was quickly becoming a suffocating watercolor, the edges blurred by an unseen, relentless force. That force, of course, had a name: Jasper.

He was everywhere. Not always physically present, but his shadow stretched long and suffocating, a constant hum beneath the surface of every interaction. I’d catch myself glancing over my shoulder in the hallways, a nervous flutter in my stomach, half-expecting to see his tall, tanned frame leaning against a locker, his eyes – those stormy, intense eyes – fixed on me. Even when he wasn’t there, his presence was a palpable thing, a weight in the air that made it harder to breathe, harder to laugh.

Chloe, bless her loyal heart, noticed. She’d always been the keen observer, the one who saw the subtle shifts, the unspoken anxieties. We were sharing a booth at our usual lunch spot, the cafeteria noise a dull roar around us, when she nudged my arm.
