Whispers and Warnings
Chloe, Emery’s first friendly face at Northwood, pulls her aside during lunch. Her brow is furrowed with concern as she watches Jasper’s possessive gaze follow Emery across the cafeteria. “Be careful, Em,” Chloe warns, her voice low. “Jasper doesn’t take no for an answer. He’s… intense. He likes to own things.” Chloe’s own past experiences with controlling personalities make her instinctively wary. She senses a storm brewing around Emery, a danger that Emery, in her optimistic pursuit of a fresh start, might not yet fully grasp. Chloe’s loyalty is evident, but her fear is palpable.
The cacophony of the Northwood High cafeteria was a jarring symphony after the relative quiet of my first few classes. I clutched my tray, navigating the sea of unfamiliar faces, my eyes scanning for a friendly, or at least neutral, spot. That’s when I saw her. Chloe. She’d been a beacon of warmth in my otherwise overwhelming morning, her smile genuine as she’d offered directions and a quick rundown of the school’s unspoken rules. Now, she was waving me over to a table tucked away in a corner, a small island of calm in the bustling room.
“Hey!” she said, her voice bright as I slid onto the bench beside her. “Finding everything okay?”
“Mostly,” I admitted, taking a bite of the surprisingly decent pizza. “Still trying to figure out which hallway leads to which dimension. But it’s… a lot.”
