Jasper corners Emery by the lockers, his imposing height casting a long shadow. His voice, a low growl, demands her attention. He uses his usual arsenal of intimidation, a subtle threat laced with arrogance. Emery, though her heart pounds against her ribs, refuses to cower. Her eyes, sharp and unwavering, meet his. The metal of the lockers felt cold against my fingertips, a stark contrast to the heat that was starting to bloom in my chest. I’d been so focused on finding my next class, on navigating the labyrinth of unfamiliar hallways, that I hadn’t even registered the shift in the atmosphere until it was too late. A shadow fell over me, long and imposing, and the low hum of hallway chatter seemed to recede, replaced by the thumping of my own pulse.
