Chapter 18
The Weight of Expectations
Emery feels the weight of her friends' concerns pressing down on her. Chloe’s worried glances and whispered warnings echo in her mind, fueling her internal conflict. Is she making a mistake by letting Jasper into her life? Is she falling for a trap, or is she witnessing a genuine transformation? The pressure to make the right choice, coupled with her own confusing emotions, leaves her feeling increasingly torn and isolated, struggling to trust her own judgment.

Chloe’s voice, her carefully chosen words, replayed in my head. “He’s… intense, Emery. And you’ve always been so strong, so independent. I just don’t want to see you… lose yourself in him. Not after everything.” She hadn’t elaborated on the “everything,” but I knew she meant the past, the reasons she’d been so quick to warn me, the stories that had circulated about Jasper before I'd even arrived. Stories of broken hearts and bruised egos, of a possessiveness that bordered on obsession.
