The air in the cafeteria was a thick, buzzing hum of teenage chatter and clattering trays. I navigated the crowded tables, my tray laden with a salad I’d picked at more than eaten and a carton of milk I’d nursed for a good ten minutes. Chloe was already at our usual corner table, her bright pink hair a beacon in the sea of muted school colors. She waved, a quick, almost shy gesture, and I offered a small smile back, trying to push down the knot of anxiety that still tightened in my stomach every time I entered this place.
It had been three weeks since I’d arrived, three weeks of trying to carve out a space for myself in this unfamiliar territory. Michigan felt like a distant dream, a lifetime away from the biting wind and the familiar comfort of my old life. Here, the sun seemed to mock me with its relentless warmth, a stark contrast to the chill that had settled deep within me since… well, since Jasper.
He was a constant shadow, a suffocating presence I couldn't seem to shake.
