Chapter 4
The Dragon's Gaze
Kira confronts the magnificent, ancient dragon. Instead of battle, she must prove her worthiness through courage and compassion, seeking a scale not through force, but understanding.
The air in the cavern was thick with an ancient stillness, a silence so profound it hummed. Kira’s breath hitched in her throat, a tiny, fragile sound swallowed by the immensity of the space. Before her, coiled upon a bed of glittering, obsidian-like stones, lay the creature of legend. It was more magnificent, more terrifying, than any tale had ever conveyed. Its scales, each the size of a warrior’s shield, shimmered with the colours of a thousand sunsets and dawns, shifting and swirling like liquid fire. Great, leathery wings, vast enough to blot out the sun, were tucked against its immense body, and from its noble head, crowned with horns like polished ivory, a pair of eyes, pools of molten gold, regarded her with an intelligence that sent a tremor through her very bones.

Fear, a cold serpent, coiled in Kira’s stomach, but beneath it, a fierce resolve burned. She remembered her mother’s fading smile, her shallow breaths, the desperate hope that had propelled her across treacherous lands and through whispering forests. She clutched the hermit’s smooth, grey stone in her hand, its coolness a grounding presence against the inferno of her apprehension. "Great Dragon," she managed, her voice a trembling thread in the cavern’s vastness, "I have journeyed far to seek your aid."
