The afternoon sun, usually a warm embrace on Tom’s back as he walked home from school, felt a little too bright, a little too revealing. He kicked a loose pebble, watching it skitter across the pavement, his thoughts a tangle of excitement and unease. The laughter of his friends, Mark and Kevin, still echoed in his ears, a siren song of shared secrets and whispered plans. They had been talking, as they often did, about ways to make things easier, ways to get ahead without all the fuss.

“Come on, Tom, it’s no big deal,” Mark had said, his eyes glinting with a familiar mischief. “Everyone does it. It’s just a little… shortcut.”

The shortcut, in this instance, involved a rather impressive cheat sheet for the upcoming history test. Mr. Harrison, their teacher, was notoriously strict, and the thought of failing that particular subject had been gnawing at Tom. He was a good student, he knew that, but history was a dense jungle of dates and names that often left him feeling lost. Mark, on the other hand, seemed to possess an uncanny ability to navigate these academic rapids, always emerging with a triumphant grin and a good grade.
