The afternoon sun, usually a warm embrace, felt a little too bright, a little too revealing, as Tom and his friends, Liam and Mark, walked home from school. They had been talking about the upcoming school fair, specifically the games of chance that promised prizes and bragging rights.

“It’s a sure thing, Tom,” Liam had insisted earlier, his eyes glinting with a mixture of mischief and confidence. “Mr. Henderson, the guy who runs the ring toss, he’s always a little distracted. And the rings, they’re weighted, you can feel it. A little nudge here, a little boost there… and boom. We get the big teddy bear for Sarah.”

The idea had taken root in Tom’s mind, a tempting seed of daring. Sarah loved those fluffy, oversized stuffed animals. He imagined her delight, her squeal of joy, and the proud look her parents would give him. It felt like a shortcut to earning that approval, a way to bypass the usual tedious effort of saving his allowance or winning a fair game through sheer luck.
