Chapter 8
The Sorcerer's Gaze
Malakor, the sorcerer behind the corruption, senses Samantha's power and begins to actively thwart her progress, sending dark creatures her way.
The air thrummed with an unnatural chill, a palpable tension that tightened Samantha’s chest. It wasn’t just the encroaching darkness, the sickly grey that leached the vibrant green from the Whispering Woods; it was a prickling awareness, a feeling of being watched by something ancient and malevolent. She clutched the rough bark of an oak, its familiar solidity a small comfort against the rising tide of unease. The Guardian Spirit, a shimmering cascade of moonlight and ancient whispers, had warned her. “The sorcerer,” it had crooned, its voice like rustling leaves, “he feels the stirrings of your power. He will not suffer a rival.”
Now, that feeling solidified into a certainty. Malakor. The name itself felt like a shard of ice against her tongue. He was the source of the rot, the venom seeping into the heart of the woods. And he knew she was coming.
A low growl, deeper and more guttural than any she’d heard from the forest’s usual denizens, ripped through the quiet. Samantha’s head snapped up. Ahead, where the path twisted into deeper shadow, a pair of eyes, like embers in the gloom, blazed with a predatory hunger. They belonged to a creature she’d never encountered, a hulking beast with matted, dark fur, claws like scythes, and a snarl that promised swift, brutal violence. It was a manifestation of Malakor’s malice, a guardian born of his dark will.
