The air in the Tangled Thicket had thinned, the oppressive gloom giving way to a dappled, emerald light. Samantha pushed aside a curtain of moss, her breath catching. Before her lay a clearing unlike any she had ever seen. It wasn’t a wild, untamed space, but one of delicate artistry. Trees with bark like polished silver spiraled towards the sky, their leaves shimmering with an inner luminescence. Flowers, impossibly vibrant, bloomed in patterns that seemed to hum with energy. And flitting among them, like living jewels, were the Sylvans.

They were small, no taller than her forearm, with wings like dragonfly gossamer and skin that shifted in hue from mossy green to bark brown to the pale blush of dawn. Their eyes, large and luminous, regarded her with an ancient, unsettling wariness. Some were weaving threads of moonlight into what looked like intricate tapestries, while others coaxed melodies from dewdrop-strung spiderwebs.

Samantha stepped fully into the clearing, her worn leather boots crunching softly on fallen petals. The Sylvans froze, their movements ceasing as one. A collective intake of breath, like the rustling of a thousand leaves, swept through the clearing.
