The air in Samantha’s small cottage felt thick, heavy with the unspoken anxieties of the encroaching darkness. Outside, the usual symphony of the Whispering Woods had dwindled to a fearful hush, the rustling leaves now sounding like worried murmurs. Samantha, her fingers tracing the worn leather of the map Elias had left, felt a knot of apprehension tighten in her stomach. The Guardian Spirit’s words echoed in her mind, a gentle but firm reminder of the immense task ahead. The Sunstone. The artifact was her only hope, but the path to it was shrouded in shadow and peril.

A sudden rap at the door startled her, her hand flying to the hilt of the small dagger she’d taken to carrying. It wasn’t the hurried, desperate knock of a villager fleeing danger, but a deliberate, measured sound. Taking a deep breath, she unlatched the door, her heart leaping into her throat.

Standing on her doorstep, silhouetted against the muted afternoon light, was Elias Thorne. He looked as she remembered him from their childhood – tall, lean, with eyes the color of a stormy sea and a scattering of freckles across his nose. But there was a new gravity about him now, a subtle intensity that hadn't been there before. He wore practical, dark leather, worn from travel, and carried a pack slung over one shoulder.
