Chapter 11
Elias's Hidden Strength
Elias reveals a surprising capability, subtly aiding Samantha in a moment of crisis, hinting at his own deeper involvement and concern.
The air in the Whispering Woods had grown heavy, thick with the cloying scent of decay that no amount of dew could wash away. Samantha pressed on, her boots sinking slightly into the damp earth, the vibrant greens of the forest now muted, tinged with a sickly grey. The trees, usually alive with a symphony of rustles and creaks, were unnervingly silent, their branches like skeletal fingers reaching towards a sky that offered no comfort. She clutched the Sunstone tighter, its warmth a small, defiant ember against the encroaching chill.
A sudden, sharp crack echoed through the oppressive quiet. Samantha spun around, her heart leaping into her throat. A massive oak, ancient and gnarled, had splintered, its trunk groaning as it began to topple. It was directly in her path, a colossal obstacle threatening to crush her and the precious artifact she carried. Panic flared, hot and sharp. She couldn't outrun it. She couldn't dodge it.
Just as the behemoth began its deadly descent, a blur of motion erupted from the undergrowth. Elias. He was there, as if he’d materialized from the very shadows he seemed to command. He moved with a speed that defied logic, his arms outstretched, not in a defensive posture, but as if he were *pushing* against the falling tree. Samantha blinked, certain her eyes were playing tricks on her. The oak, impossibly, seemed to slow its fall, its descent becoming a ponderous, almost hesitant crawl.
