The air in the sparring chamber crackled, not with the usual hum of focused energy, but with a raw, untamed antagonism. Sam stood opposite the figure who had emerged from the shadows of the monastery, a ghost from the training halls of his past. It was Jian, his jaw set in a grim line, his eyes burning with a resentment that Sam had never seen directed at him before. Jian, who had always been a step behind Sam in physical prowess, but who now seemed to possess an unnerving, silent power.
“You,” Sam breathed, the word catching in his throat. He’d recognized the subtle shift in the monastery’s aura, the discordant note that had unsettled him since the Tsdf weapon’s disappearance. He hadn’t expected the source to be someone he knew, someone he’d once considered a comrade.
Jian offered a thin, humorless smile. “Surprised, Brooks? You always were so good at missing the obvious. Too busy with your own struggles to see what was happening right under your nose.”
