The air in the clearing hummed with an expectant stillness, a stark contrast to the frantic beat of Sam’s heart. He stood at the edge of the dappled sunlight, the intricately carved wooden bird cradled in his calloused hands. Its wings were spread in mid-flight, its painted eyes bright and knowing. He’d poured every ounce of his grief, his fear, and his desperate hope into its creation, each stroke of his knife a silent prayer. The hermit’s words echoed in his mind: "A gift, freely given, can mend even the most tangled of knots." He hoped, with a fierceness that surprised him, that this little bird was enough.

They flitted and hovered, their movements a symphony of playful curiosity. One, with hair like spun moonlight, pointed a delicate finger towards the wooden bird. A chorus of excited chirps and giggles rippled through them.

Sam took a deep breath and stepped forward, his boots crunching softly on the fallen leaves. He held the bird out, his voice a little rough with emotion. "I have brought you a gift," he said, his gaze sweeping over their expectant faces. "A toy, as we agreed."
