Chapter 10
Negotiating with Mischief
Sam, relieved Pip is safe, must now reason with the sprites. He understands their playful nature but needs Pip back. He proposes a trade, a way to satisfy their desire for play.
Sam’s heart, which had been a leaden weight in his chest for what felt like an eternity, now fluttered like a trapped bird, a fragile thing on the cusp of flight. Pip! His Pip, alive and well, if a little bewildered and dusted with a faint, shimmering pollen. The relief was a tidal wave, washing away the fear and despair that had threatened to drown him. Pip, nestled in his father’s arms, mumbled something that sounded like “shiny,” and Sam could only nod, his gaze fixed on the tiny creatures that had brought him so much agony and now, such profound joy. The sprites. They were as the hermit had hinted – not truly malicious, but driven by a child-like, if otherworldly, impulse for amusement. They flitted around them, their tiny forms radiating a faint, bioluminescent glow, their wide, curious eyes – some the colour of moss, others like polished amber – fixed on Sam and Pip.
