Chapter 8

Episode 8

Javan Lives a desolate life. He cries for assistance but none bothers

The salt spray did little to cleanse the ache in Javan’s chest. Each wave that crashed against the worn pilings of the old pier was a hollow echo of the emptiness that had settled in his gut. He’d tried. God, he’d tried. He’d walked the cobbled streets, the same streets he’d once navigated with a swagger, his gaze now fixed on the cracked stones. He’d offered tentative smiles to faces that had once been welcoming, only to meet polite, distant nods. The whispers, once curious murmurs about the newcomer, had morphed into something else – a quiet dismissal, a collective turning away.

He’d cried out, in his own way. Not with shouts, but with the desperate, silent screams of a man adrift. He’d lingered in the doorways of the few shops that still opened their shutters, his presence a question mark nobody seemed inclined to answer. He’d even visited the small, unassuming church, the scent of old wood and beeswax usually a comfort, but today it only magnified his solitude. He’d knelt, head bowed, a silent plea for connection, for a hand to reach out, for a voice to break the oppressive silence. Nothing. The pews remained empty, the air thick with an indifference that felt like a physical weight.

He remembered the days when his phone would buzz incessantly, a lifeline to a world that demanded his attention. Now, it lay dormant, a cold, black rectangle in his pocket. He’d even considered calling his father, the man he’d been dreading seeing, the man who represented everything he’d run from. But the thought of that call, the confession of his utter failure, was a chasm too wide to bridge. He was drowning in the quiet, the vast, indifferent ocean of Port Blossom mirroring the desolation within him. He was a ghost in a town that had once embraced him, a pariah in a place that had promised a new beginning, and no one, not a single soul, seemed to notice he was sinking.
