The salt-laced air, once a balm, now felt thick and suffocating as Javan’s words hung in the small, sun-drenched room. He’d rehearsed it a hundred times, picturing Fridah’s delighted surprise, the soft blush on her cheeks, the gentle acceptance. Instead, her laughter, a sound that had previously sung to his soul, now scraped against it like barnacles on a hull. It wasn't the light, airy sound he knew, but something sharper, laced with a mockery he couldn't comprehend.
"Marriage, Javan?" she finally managed, wiping a tear of mirth from her eye. Her gaze, usually so warm and direct, flickered away, settling on the worn rug beneath their feet. "You're serious? You truly think… that's a possibility?"
He nodded, his throat tightening. "Of course, I'm serious. Fridah, you’re… you’re everything I’ve hoped for. You’re the one who makes this place feel like home. I can’t imagine my life here without you." He reached for her hand, but she subtly pulled away, her fingers curling into her palm.
