The late afternoon sun, a hazy apricot through the city’s mild smog, cast long shadows across the park. Zoid, lost in the melodic hum of their headphones, ambled along the familiar path, their oversized tee a comfortable shroud, baggy jeans a familiar embrace. They were in that sweet spot between the day’s demands and the night’s potential, a space where anything felt possible, yet nothing was truly expected. Then, a blur of blond hair, a flash of emerald eyes, and the world tilted. Luke.

He was jogging, his physique a testament to dedication, muscles rippling beneath his athletic wear as he passed. Zoid’s breath hitched, a small, involuntary sound swallowed by the music. They’d seen him before, of course. In passing, at the coffee shop, once even at a distance across a crowded bar. Each time, that same quiet jolt, that flicker of something more than casual observation. But today felt different. Today, as he rounded a bend in the path, he stumbled. Not a dramatic fall, just a slight, clumsy misstep that sent him sprawling onto the grass, his water bottle rolling away.

Without thinking, Zoid pulled off their headphones, the sudden silence amplifying the thud of their own heart. They jogged over, a wave of concern washing over their usual guardedness. “Whoa, you okay?” they asked, their voice a little rough from disuse.
