Chapter 4
The Casual Encounter
Zoid navigates their usual social scene, but Luke's image lingers. They question if a genuine connection is possible when they’re used to fleeting intimacy.
The familiar thrum of the city was Zoid’s usual lullaby, a constant soundtrack to their life of shifting connections and fleeting touches. Tonight, however, the melody felt off-key, a discordant note played by the memory of emerald eyes. They found themselves at a dimly lit bar, the kind that smelled of spilled beer and desperation, a place where casual encounters were as common as the sticky rings on the tables. Zoid’s usual easy banter felt stilted, their gaze drifting towards the door with an almost involuntary pull.
A group of friends, loud and boisterous, occupied a corner booth. Zoid offered a polite nod, a practiced smile, and slid into a vacant stool at the bar. The bartender, a man with a perpetually unimpressed expression, slid a glass of amber liquid towards them. Zoid took a slow sip, the burn a welcome distraction from the swirling thoughts in their head. Luke. The name itself felt like a whispered confession.
They’d spent the last few days replaying their brief, almost accidental meeting in their mind. The way his blond hair curled just so, the startling intensity of his green eyes, the quiet confidence that seemed to emanate from him like a warm aura. It was a stark contrast to the usual faces Zoid encountered, faces that blurred into a single, forgettable entity after a night of shared intimacy. Luke, though… Luke was a masterpiece. A sculpted, sun-kissed masterpiece.
