The first rays of dawn, soft and apologetic, crept through the blinds, painting stripes of gold across the rumpled duvet. Zoid stirred, a contented sigh escaping their lips, the scent of Luke’s skin, a comforting mix of clean linen and something uniquely him, a familiar anchor. Last night had been a whirlwind of celebration, laughter, and the sweet, intoxicating rush of Luke’s undivided attention. The new dog, a fluffy whirlwind of pure joy named Comet, had been the perfect birthday surprise, and the subsequent “birthday bonus” had been… well, it had been everything Zoid had dreamed of and more.

Luke’s arm was a warm, solid weight around Zoid’s waist, his breathing deep and even. Zoid shifted, careful not to disturb him, and turned their head to look at his face. Amongst them was a small, intricately carved wooden box, a gift from Luke’s parents, a surprising gesture given their earlier homophobia. Zoid picked it up, a flicker of apprehension warring with curiosity.
