Chapter 11
A Moment of Vulnerability
Luke opens up to Zoid about his past, perhaps hinting at the difficulties with Marilyn. This shared vulnerability deepens their connection and trust.
The city hummed a low, electric lullaby outside the apartment window, a stark contrast to the quiet intimacy that had settled between Zoid and Luke. The air, thick with the lingering scent of their shared meal and the faint, clean aroma of Luke’s skin, felt charged with an unspoken anticipation. Zoid traced the rim of their empty wine glass, the cool glass a grounding sensation against the nervous flutter in their chest. They had expected this night to be a continuation of their previous encounters, a comfortable dance of shared laughter and flirtation. But Luke, with his unnervingly steady gaze and the way he’d just held Zoid’s hand across the table, had shifted something. It felt deeper, more significant than just another casual entanglement.
Luke, sensing Zoid’s quiet contemplation, leaned forward, his emerald eyes, usually so bright and full of easy amusement, now held a softer, more introspective light. He’d been unusually quiet since they’d returned from the restaurant, a subtle shift that Zoid had noticed immediately. It wasn’t the silence of disinterest, but rather the thoughtful pause before a confession.
“You’ve been quiet, Zoid,” Luke said, his voice a low rumble that vibrated pleasantly in the stillness. He released Zoid’s hand, only to reach out and gently tuck a stray strand of blue hair behind Zoid’s ear. The simple gesture sent a jolt through Zoid, a wave of warmth that had nothing to do with the wine.
