Chapter 6 — What the Land Remembers

On Monday morning, Jonas and Elena travel to the district land office with the bundle of documents. Jonas reads through the papers on the way, discovering the full scope of Elena's decades-long correspondence with Soviet and post-Soviet authorities. At the office, he helps present the old cadastral records and his great-grandfather's handwritten boundary description. The reviewer confirms the documents carry weight and schedules a formal hearing. On the journey home, Elena speaks more openly than before about her trip to Vilnius decades ago. Back in Rydiskas, Vytautas offers a final reflection by the oak, and Jonas writes his last diary entry, recognizing that the family's story is not ending but being properly handed forward.

Jonas woke before dawn, not to any sound but to the absence of one. The house held its breath. He lay still beneath the heavy quilt and listened to the silence of a place preparing itself for something decisive. Outside, frost had thickened overnight into a white crust across the yard, and the kitchen window glowed faintly with the light Elena always kept burning when sleep would not come.

He found her at the table, the bundle of papers laid out before her like a patient waiting to be examined. She had arranged them in an order only she understood. The cloth map sat unfolded to one side, its edges weighted with two smooth stones from the garden. Beside it, the typewritten letters and official notices formed a small, precise stack. At the far end, placed apart as though it occupied a different category of significance, lay the single handwritten sheet from her father — the boundary description in faded angular script that Jonas had glimpsed by moonlight two nights before.

Elena did not look up when he entered. She was checking something, her lips moving slightly as she read. Her hands rested on either side of the documents, palms down, fingers spread — the posture of someone steadying herself against a surface that might shift.
