Chapter 20
Russo, the Legend
Russo, the Chiweenie who thinks he's a mountain goat, becomes a local legend. His tales of bravery and paper-chewing are told, proving that even the smallest dogs can have the biggest adventures.
Russo, the Chiweenie who genuinely believed his tiny paws were meant for scaling the highest peaks, had, in a rather short span of time, become a legend. Not just a legend in the hushed whispers of his own backyard, but a full-blown, story-time, campfire-tale legend throughout the entire neighborhood. His adventures, a whirlwind of misplaced mail, daring furniture ascents, and a truly epic expedition that had involved a missing map and a very surprised shepherd, had cemented his status.
The story that everyone loved to retell, often with a chuckle and a shake of their heads, was about the Great Mail Debacle. Mrs. Gable from next door, a woman whose prized petunias were almost as famous as her perfectly frosted lemon cakes, would recount it with a dramatic flourish. “You see,” she’d begin, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, “that little Russo, bless his wild heart, he’d developed a *taste* for the mail! Not just a nibble, mind you, but a full-on, paper-shredding, envelope-devouring frenzy. The poor mail carrier, bless him too, he’d come by, and before you could say ‘junk mail,’ Russo would be performing his own unique postal service, turning bills and birthday cards into confetti. Amy and Rex, they tried everything! They’d put the mail in a special box, they’d try to distract him with squeaky toys, they even tried putting a tiny little fence around the mailbox. But Russo? He was a mountain goat, you see. He’d find a way. He’d leap onto the little fence, then onto the mailbox itself, and with a triumphant bark, he’d be in paper heaven!”
And then there was the tale of the Grand Adventure. Oh, that adventure! It had started with Amy and Rex’s meticulously planned camping trip, a serene escape into nature that was destined to be anything but serene, thanks to their resident mountain goat. Russo, with his uncanny ability to sense an impending adventure from miles away, had, of course, orchestrated his own inclusion. He’d managed to sneak into Baby Blue Bears’ travel carrier, a feat that still baffled Amy and Rex. “How did he even get in there?” Rex would marvel, shaking his head. “Baby Blue Bears is a Chihuahua, not a magician’s assistant, and Russo is a Chiweenie, not a Houdini!”
